The Island of the Dolls
When thinking of planning a vacation to Mexico, many picture the idea of going to a beautiful beach and sipping margaritas. However, I was looking for something a little different. I wanted to see the uncommon and strange. So I thought to myself, “why not visit a really haunted island where a few people died and check out some creepy shit!” And that’s when I planned my trip to the infamous island of the dolls!
The Story starts in the lake of Xochimilco where the Aztecs created man made islands consisting of mud and dirt for farming, called chinampas. Don Julian was a local native of Xochimilco and was fairly isolated on his own chinampa. One day, he discovered a drowned girl in front of his chinampa and a doll next to her body. To show respect, Don Julian hung up that doll on his island. However, he then experienced being haunted by the spirit of the girl. Don Julian tried to appease the spirit by hanging more dolls to the point It became an obsession, where he would search for dolls through garbage cans, pick some up left in nearby canals, and even buy more dolls to hang up around the island. Don Julian continued to do so for 50 years, until he was also found drowned and lifeless in the same spot as the girl found before. To this day visitors say they hear the spirit of the girl and some even witnessing the dolls move!
Now my journey started by heading to Xochimilco from Mexico City, which was an hour drive. Xochimilco is a very popular tourist destination by taking vibrant and colorful boats called trajineras around the canals to enjoy live music, awesome food and other boats selling awesome souvenirs. I had to bargain and negotiate with a tour guide to be brave enough to take me to the island of the dolls because it was an alternative route from the tourist area, as well as an additional 2 hours to get there. We even had to go through a special entrance where our boat had to be lifted by crane to enter the forbidden route. Through the 2-hour journey, the route was just eerie. Abandon homes, fallen trees blocking the canal, and the occasional individual doll hung on a random tree, that appeared as a warning or sign of the direction we were heading. This felt like the beginning of a typical and cheesy horror movie! When we found it, we were greeted by Don Julian’s nephew who was the new caretaker and allowed us into the infamous Chinampa. The island was occupied of over 2,000 dolls at every direction. Dolls were nailed to walls and hung up by clothing lines.
I didn’t experience or see anything haunted or paranormal. However, I did have the feeling of being watched, which made my spine stand tall the entire time I was there. The experience was different but exciting. Especially after hearing so much about the island on famous tv shows and documentaries, I was happy to stand in the middle of what has become an infamous urban legend. By far this was my creepiest adventure and did not regret it!
